Advancing Research. Building Understanding. Changing the Future.
Help turn the unanswered questions of HUWE1 into the discoveries that change lives.
A Rare Condition. A Profound Impact. An Urgent Need for Research.
For families affected by HUWE1-related conditions, a diagnosis often marks the beginning of a journey filled with questions, uncertainty, and the search for answers.
HUWE1-related neurodevelopmental conditions are associated with changes in the HUWE1 gene, which plays an important role in cellular processes that support normal development and function. Although scientific understanding continues to advance, important questions remain about how different genetic changes affect individuals, how symptoms develop over time, and what approaches may ultimately improve outcomes.
Behind every research question is a person. A child whose future holds unanswered possibilities. Parents searching for information and guidance. Families navigating complex medical, developmental, and educational needs while hoping that science will move forward.
For rare genetic conditions, research can face significant challenges, including limited numbers of affected individuals, gaps in scientific knowledge, and difficulty securing dedicated funding. Promising questions may remain unexplored simply because the resources needed to investigate them are not available.
The HUWE1 Foundation exists to help change that.
Through philanthropic investment in research, increased awareness, and collaboration with the scientific and family communities, the Foundation seeks to accelerate progress toward a future with greater understanding, better-informed care, and more possibilities for individuals affected by HUWE1-related conditions.
The opportunity before us
Scientific discovery requires more than promising ideas. It requires resources, sustained commitment, collaboration, and the opportunity to investigate questions that might otherwise go unanswered. Philanthropic funding can help move HUWE1 research forward by supporting focused projects, enabling collaboration, and helping investigators pursue important questions about the biology and effects of HUWE1-related conditions.
Every advance in understanding can help establish a stronger foundation for the next discovery.
- Advance scientific understanding. Support research into the biological mechanisms underlying HUWE1-related conditions and the ways different genetic changes may affect development and function.
- Improve knowledge of the condition. Encourage research that helps clarify clinical features, individual differences, developmental trajectories, and long-term needs.
- Build a foundation for future interventions. Support appropriate early-stage and translational research that may identify promising avenues for future therapeutic development.
- Strengthen collaboration. Help researchers, clinicians, and families contribute to a more connected research community, sharing knowledge and identifying the questions that matter most.
The timing matters because scientific progress builds on itself. Data gathered today can inform the next study. A better understanding of disease mechanisms can help researchers design more focused experiments. Collaboration can reduce duplication and direct limited resources toward meaningful questions.
We cannot promise when a breakthrough will occur. We can, however, invest in the research, relationships, and scientific opportunities that make progress possible.
What the HUWE1 Foundation Will Do
The Foundation's research-first approach is designed to turn philanthropic generosity into purposeful scientific investment while building the awareness and community needed to sustain long-term progress.
0.Create a Strategic Roadmap for Therapeutic Translation
The Foundation will establish a first-ever comprehensive roadmap designed to bridge the gap between basic scientific discovery and clinical application. By outlining key milestones, target biological mechanisms, and regulatory pathways, this roadmap will ensure that research outcomes can be effectively translated into viable therapeutic treatments for individuals with HUWE1-related conditions.
To support this vision, the Foundation will collaborate with industry and HUWE1 experts to identify critical knowledge gaps and high-priority research projects. Additionally, we will recruit scientific experts to serve on our Scientific Advisory Council to guide our overarching research strategy.
1.Invest in HUWE1 Research
The Foundation will seek to identify and support high-priority research projects through engagement with qualified scientific experts and research institutions. Potential areas of focus include:
- Understanding HUWE1 biology and the mechanisms involved in HUWE1-related conditions.
- Investigating how genetic variation relates to clinical features and individual outcomes.
- Supporting appropriate research models and early-stage investigations that may inform future therapeutic approaches.
- Improving the evidence base through studies of clinical characteristics, development, and natural history.
Research priorities will be established through scientific review, with attention to feasibility, potential impact, responsible use of funds, and opportunities to build on existing knowledge.
2.Build Awareness and Understanding
Rare conditions can be difficult to recognize and understand, particularly when knowledge is limited or families have few opportunities to connect with others facing similar challenges.
The Foundation will work to increase understanding of HUWE1-related conditions among families, healthcare professionals, researchers, potential funders, and the broader public. Through accessible educational resources, responsible storytelling, outreach, and collaboration, awareness efforts can help make reliable information easier to find and bring greater visibility to the need for continued research.
Awareness is not separate from scientific progress. It can help connect families, encourage collaboration, attract new supporters, and strengthen the community working toward better outcomes.
3.Engage and Empower Families
Families bring essential perspectives to the research process. Their experiences can help identify unanswered questions, highlight unmet needs, and inform priorities for future studies.
The Foundation will seek meaningful family engagement while respecting privacy, informed consent, and the individual circumstances of each family. As resources and organizational capacity develop, the Foundation may also explore appropriate family assistance initiatives, including education, resource navigation, and connections to relevant support services.
4.Build a Collaborative Research Community
HUWE1 research exists within a broader landscape of rare genetic and neurodevelopmental conditions. Some challenges—including limited patient populations, fragmented information, and gaps in research funding—are shared across many rare diseases.
The Foundation will pursue opportunities to collaborate where doing so can advance its HUWE1 mission, strengthen research, and contribute to broader scientific understanding. By working constructively with researchers, institutions, families, and other organizations, the Foundation can help ensure that its efforts complement existing work and direct resources toward meaningful unmet needs.
How Your Gift Will Make a Difference
Philanthropy can play a distinctive role in rare disease research. A charitable gift can help support a clearly defined research question, provide resources for a promising project, or help establish the foundation for future scientific investment.
